What is DKIM?

Let's start at the beginning and explain exactly what DKIM is. DKIM stands for DomainKeys Identified Mail and is a method of email authentication that uses digital signatures. This involves the use of private and public keys. The outgoing mail servers have the private key, which is used to create a unique digital signature for each outgoing message. At the same time, the public key is available via a DNS record on the domain, allowing the recipient to verify that the message originated from the domain owner.

To put it simply: This means that DKIM enables the recipient to verify that the message actually originates from the owner of the domain. Furthermore, it guarantees that the message remains unchanged during transmission.

DKIM at Level27

DKIM is already active on our own mail environment, allowing users with a Level27 mailbox to already enjoy this extra validation. We would like to extend this functionality to the websites hosted on our “Agency hosting” platform, which is why we have implemented DKIM in our mail component.

As an agency, you have the option of linking a domain to the mail component. This domain can be registered with us, but you can also register it administratively without having to transfer it. Once your domain is available in our control panel, you can easily link it to the component.

If we take care of the complete management of your domain, we will handle all technical aspects behind the scenes. We generate a private key on the mail component server and provide all outgoing emails from the linked domain with a digital signature.
For external domains, the necessary DNS records are visible in the control panel, and all you need to do is set them up with your provider.

You can check the DKIM validation by looking at the email headers, where you should find a line labelled “DKIM-Signature”.
